But as well as being able to deliver great punchlines, he is also a talented singer and songwriter.

So his forthcoming gig at New Longton Village Hall will deliver not just laughter lines, but also a selection of his own music.

Phil, who recently completed his The Final Curtain Tour, is actually officially in retirement from professional comedy.

But he agreed to make a return for one of his local venues.

At 16 Phil was influenced by many of the great song writers of the sixties and began to write his own music. Although this continued throughout his life, his comedy stole the thunder and so the funny side took over and the guitar was laid aside.

Since picking it up again, however, Phil has toured successfully as a duo with Ken Nicol and they released a joint CD ‘Nicol and Cool’ featuring many of Phil’s works.

In one of his recent concerts he appeared at Fairport Convention’s Cropredy Festival and he has also toured with the band.

His first TV appearances in the early eighties were followed up with two series of Spitting Image on which he was the voice of Boy George, Holly Johnson and Mick Jagger.

Tickets for the concert at 8pm tomorrow night are £12 each and can be bought online at www.fofshop.com or by calling Jim Minall on 07971 243809.
