The Washington DC-born artist is already familiar with life on this side of the Atlantic, having spent some of his college life in Cork, Ireland.

In fact it was there, in 1985, that his music career really began – as a busker on the city’s streets.

After several false starts it was 1990 before Slaid, who now lives with is wife in Austin, Texas, released his debut cassette, The Promise.

The following year he and band The Moxie Men, with Slaid on lead vocals and acoustic
guitar, recorded Looks Good from the Road.

And this was enough to prompts critics to tip them as the ones to watch.

But by 1991 Slaid’s solo career was taking off, and in 1992 he won a prestigious folk award at the Kerrville Folk Festival; previous winners include Steve Earle and Nanci Griffith.
