Band makes waves at The Continental Preston

You could be forgiven for calling The Wave Pictures slow-burn.

They took their time to settle into a permanent line-up and satisfied themselves with the DIY circuit, very much on a part-time basis, before really finding their feet.

In fact in the course of eight years they produced just six CDs, all of them self-released and distributed at their own gigs and traded with like-minded artists like Herman Düne, the Mountain Goats, Jeffrey Lewis, and Darren Hayman (ex-Hefner), all of whom the Wave Pictures collaborated with live and on record.

So... not exactly a meteoric rise to fame.

The original trio, all from the tiny rural village of Wymeswold in Leicestershire, comprised lead singer and guitarist David Tattersall, bassist Franic Rozycki and drummer Hugh J Noble .

That was back in 1988, but it wasn’t to last – and neither, thankfully, was the original name – Blind Summit.

Noble headed off to academia, to be replaced by Jonny ‘Huddersfield’ Helm, and The Wave Pictures was born.

In 2006, with Tattersall, Rozycki and Helm all having emerged unscathed from their stints at different universities, the Wave Pictures moved to London and signed with the indie label Moshi Moshi Records, which released the trio’s first proper album, Sophie, the same year.

A second album, Instant Coffee Baby, followed in 2008.

The band’s influences were many, but like so many teenagers, they were partly led by their parents’ classic rock record collections and John Peel’s indie-centric radio show.

They will be appearing at The Continental in Preston at 8pm on September 24. Tickets are £7 and are available from the Continental bar or by calling 01772 499425.
