Animals and Cropper, R&B royalty on the way

Arguably Britain’s first truly great rhythm and blues band rolls into Lancashire next month – and keeping them company will be a true legend of American R&B.

The Animals & Friends play Clitheroe Grand on November 9 with support from Steve Cropper, former Booker T & The MGs axeman.

Co-founder of the Animals John Steel, back of picture, will lead the latest incarnation of this iconic band through a set of hits both self-penned and covers. Formed in 1957, by 1964 The Animals were in the vanguard of British music worldwide,
being the second homegrown act to top the charts in the USA with House of The Rising Sun.

Numerous hits and personnel changes followed, but with Steel in place this remains the authentic Animals experience.

Joining them on the night, Steve Cropper is nothing less than R&B royalty. On rhythm guitar with the MGs he had a hand in some of the 1960s most famous tunes, including Green Onions and Soul Limbo.

As a member of the Stax house band that backed Otis, Sam & Dave, Eddie Floyd and others, his licks have likely thrilled more blues fans than any other single guitarist.
