African rhythms from Orchestre DC Dansette

The irresistible eight piece draw, who draw their inspiration from the music of the African continent but add a Western twist, are back in the South Meadow Lane pub’s Arts Space after a riotous show there last year.

They fuse the drive of Congolese soukous and Kenyan benga to the mellower styles of Malian kora or Ethiopian music into a guitar-driven sound.

And they spice it up further with their jazz-anchored horn section and add lyrics lifted from a huge variety of eclectic sources, including presidential speeches, newspaper reviews and philosophical treatises to create a thoroughly idiosyncratic form of dance music.

The band last played at the Continental when they appeared on the line up for their mini Jazz Fest in November - and they went down such a storm that the pub’s music promoters decided they had to have them back again.

The Lunecy Review said of them: “Their low-down grooves and highbrow words make for invigorating and life affirming dance music.”

Doors for tomorrow night’s show open at 8pm.
