A strong Preston squad is missing a touch of stardust, says fan John Smith

While there was no sign of Watford's honorary life president Sir Elton John in the crowd at Deepdale I would imagine that if he had viewed this very competitive goalless draw his feelings after the game would be similar to mine.

I am sure he would not have felt like spending his Saturday evening bopping to "Crocodile Rock".

However after an encouraging display in which we maintained our unbeaten start to the season neither was I despondent enough to feel like crooning "Sad Songs" on the karaoke.

It was definitely a stiff test against the Hertfordshire outfit one who I would consider to be one of the division’s big hitters having been in the Premier League last season.

In the first half we more than matched them and could have gone into the interval in front had it not been for the Watford keeper who made two fine saves in keeping out efforts from Alan Browne and Ryan Ledson.

It was the second time in the week that we have been denied a long awaited first home goal this season by an opposition keeper in outstanding form.

Early on in the second half, skipper Alan Browne was thwarted again when the keeper acrobatically tipped away his close range effort when it looked like we had finally broken the deadlock.

Unlike the Rotherham game this one was not one sided and the visitors looked more likely than us to score as we tired a bit in the last half hour.

I thought that overall it was a good all-round team performance which again had everything but a goal in it.

The result means that we are now on our longest unbeaten start to a season since we returned to the Championship seven years ago.

Although it looks on paper like our attacking options possess a cutting edge similar to those of a pair of crayola scissors, we have created chances and even though this was our third successive 0-0 draw at Deepdale the games have not been boring to watch.

Also a good defensive side is the springboard of a successful team and we are now the only team in the whole of the EFL not to have conceded a goal.

I think we have the nucleus of a good side but as I said after the Wigan game on the opening day of the season, I still think we are short of that one player with the quality of a Cameron Archer or a Callum Robinson up front who could maybe turn these draws into a win.

We are only three points off the top of the table but I believe we still need to strengthen the squad if we are going to make the play-offs at this level for the first time since 2008/09.

However, as manager Ryan Lowe said in a recent interview, we do not want to sign someone who has a different type of head than those of the rest of the squad – one who might possibly upset the great team spirit we currently have at Deepdale.

But if I saw Sky TV beaming pictures of Christiano Ronaldo landing at Euxton in a helicopter on deadline day I personally would not be complaining.
