Our members treasure their local 200 year old Lancaster Canal for its peace, wildlife and a route for enjoyable walks.
Our June speaker, Colin Dickinson, opened our eyes to its design, history and commercial purpose.

The transport of limestone, coal, coke, mahogany and even gun-powder kept many families of Bargees employed. It must have been a hard life as they dropped their children off for schooling in local villages and collected them on their return journey from Kendal or Preston.

We can still admire the beautiful aqueducts and bridges designed and constructed from local stone by the famous civil engineer John Rennie, but only some of the stables and taverns still exist now as houses or restaurants.

We stay with our historical theme next month when we meet on 29th July at 7.30. Our speaker will be Stephanie Murray with her "Photos of old Preston".

Do join us for tea, cakes and friendship.
