Beginning its 2009 Lecture programme, members of the NW Hardy Plant Society listened with appreciation to Elaine Taylor (Past Chair) in her new role as Chair of Lancashire Gardens Trust.
She gave a wide-ranging talk on 'Gardens fit for a Lord' outlining the extensive work done in the North West by Thomas Mawson – the first designated Landscape Architect who was awarded Honorary Membership of the Arts & Crafts Guild.
Renowned for his work with Lord Leverhulme on Roynton Cottage on the huge landscaping project at Rivington, Thomas Mawson (who was born at Scorton and lived at Hest Bank) created the most beautiful designed gardens with terraces, balustrading, steps and gates, with attention to every design detail.
Illustrating with slides, Elaine showed the amazing work done at Stanley Park, Blackpool; Graythwaite Hall, Hazelwood in Silverdale, and at Greenthorn at Bolton amongst many others in the North West.
Maureen Sawyer, Chair, asked for volunteers to help with the usual exhibit at Southport Flower Show, to follow on the success of the Group last year in gaining a Silver Gilt Medal at Chelsea.
The NW Group of the Hardy Plant Society meets at Samlesbury Memorial Hall on the third Monday of every month up to May when the programme of summer garden visits begins.
Visitors welcome.
Membership details available from Erica Hodgkinson on 01254 812583.
