It was a full house at the July meeting, members from six other institutes had been invited plus members from the widows organization.
We began with Jerusalem this was followed by the business which Sheila the President read out. Several invitations had been received for various events, walks, strawberry teas, quizzes and summer concerts which would keep us busy through the summer.

The speaker Gillian Coxhead gave us a very interesting talk which she had called 'the story of friendship' which it was she told us how she had moved house and became the neighbour of Mary and her husband Steve.

A friendship began, Mary was originally from Africa and was called back to Africa because her Father was ill eventually passing away.

On the day of his funeral they were amazed to see children arriving on their own. These children were orphans and had come to see if they could be fed.

Upon questioning these children Mary was appalled at the conditions and circumstances of these children.

When she arrived back in Lancashire she spoke to her friends and said she needed to help them.

A charity was set up. Gillian and her family decided to go to Africa for a holiday to see first hand how these children survive.

Together with Mary and friends they have put together a project to help and they try to raise money which is donated to 'Friends of Malawi Orphans' to clothe, feed educate and make sure they have the basic needs.

Janice Kirkman gave the vote of thanks for an excellent and passionate talk.

Everyone then enjoyed a most wonderful Jacobs join.

Gillian chose the winning entry in the competition for a home made Children's card, winner was Lois Haselden runners up being Joan Ditchfield and Val Watson.

The raffle prizes were won by the visitors.

One prize being the lovely table flowers donated by Val Watson.

Just before the close of the meeting Joan Ditchfield read out some amusing articles she had come across.

The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.

The next meeting is on September 3, at 7pm, St James' School, Slater Lane, Leyland. Everyone welcome.
