In this change to the listed programme, Mr Dickinson will give a presentation titled "The Development of the Port of Preston" covering the history of Preston Docks from their early development to the present day.

The history of the River Ribble as a transport and trade link is a long one demonstrated by the remains of the Bronze Age canoe and other artifacts excavated during the Dock's construction in the 1880s which are now on display in Preston's Harris Museum.

When the Albert Edward Dock was opened in 1892, it was the largest single dock in the country.

Preston Docks were a pioneer in "roll on roll off operations". By the 1960's, the port held the record for managing the largest amount of ferry container traffic. In 1969 the dock employed 500 people and 16% of the UK's total trade passed through the port.

"Colin Dickinson is one of the leading experts on the development of the Port of Preston," said Peter Houghton, Chair of the Leyland Historical Society.

"His presentations are always very interesting and thought provoking as Colin combines the historical facts with the personal interest stories of the workers or people involved with the development".

Admission to this event is free for Leyland Historical Society Members and £2 for visitors.
