No meeting this month because we had our mystery trip. After boarding our coach and being well on our way, most of our members guessed our destination, which was to Alston Hall in Longridge.
After a wonderful meal in the newly decorated dining room we went upstairs to meet our speaker.
Ann Kelly is a very well known speaker and when she told us that the evening's talk was on The Life of Thora Hird we all became very interested because Thora is a very well known Lancashire Lass.
Thora was born in Morecombe and her first appearance on the stage was at 8 weeks old.
Her father was the stage manager at the Royalty Theatre in Morecombe and, as her bedroom overlooked the stage, she listened and learned how to act.
She was introduced to a London agent through George Formby and from this she appeared on the stage in London and also in many films.
Television beckoned and she was in lots of well known comedies, Praise Be on Sundays and, in the last few years before her death, in Last of the Summer Wine.
Ann took us all through the plays, films and television shows and brought back lots of memories to us. She was a wonderful speaker and Joan Bolitho gave her a vote of thanks.
Next month our speaker is the Rev. Alan Reid who is going to tell us about "The Humorous Side of Clerical Life". The competition is for a "pen".
The meeting will be held at the Village Hall, School Lane, Freckleton.
Do please come along and see us, new members are always welcome.
