A small quilt or blanket is sometimes just the thing to comfort a child who is ill or lonely for one reason or another and that is what the voluntary organisation Project Linus provides.
One of the Lancashire co-ordinators of the scheme, Lesley Mercer, of Eccleston, explained to members at their June meeting how the Project began in the USA in 1995 when 'security blankets' were made for a children's cancer centre.
Mrs Mercer said there were now 70 co-ordinators in the UK and that 82,000 quilts and blankets had been made and delivered in the past eight years.
She displayed a wide variety of quilts and blankets which had been made, illustrating different stitching and techniques.
After proposing a vote of thanks, Val Potter presented her with several more blankets made by members of the WI's patchwork group.
The competition for a child's blanket or quilt, judged by Mrs Mercer, was won by Shirley Martin.
A report of the national annual meeting in Liverpool was presented by group delegate Susan Inglis, of Withnell Fold WI and a brief description of the painting and singing courses they attended at Denman College were given by Majorie Acton and Sheila McMillan respectively.
The next meeting will be on July 9 when Sue Macdonald 'The Bra Doctor' is due to speak.
