Over 50 members listed carefully to Peter Holden of Springfield Nurseries describing the wide range of campanulas now available to us.
From Campanula rotundifolia (harebell) to C latiloba alba (one of the best herbaceous campanulas) characteristics ranged from C latiloba (which needs to be close to other plants to restrict its growth), through the lovely rubriflora varieties (Bowl of Cherries) to an 18 ft monocarpic (flowers and dies the same year) variety.
Best tips were very valuable - from when to sow campanula seeds (towards the end of August) to the importance of dividing up clumps every three years to reinvigorate them.
Describing the antics of wild boar hunting for spring food, and doing a splendid job in spreading out perennial plants, was an amusing anecdote to remind members to bring surplus plants to the annual Spring Plant Sale on Saturday April 26 at Trinity Methodist Hall, Gillibrand Walks, Chorley.
The next visit was to Gresgarth Hall at Caton, near Lancaster, a brilliant garden designed by Lady Arabella Lennox-Boyd.
Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month at Chorley Cricket Club on Sandringham Road, Chorley, at 7.30 pm. Visitors are always welcome.
