Today one reader writes in to give their view on pig racing. Julia Pilling said: "I read your website every day and think it is excellent. I was, however, distressed to see an article and video on pig racing.
By showing the video I feel that it legitimises this racing."
Council 'encouraging fly tipping'I have this minute submitted an online request to have a small shed removed, and been contacted by someone from Preston Council to advise me that it would cost me £67.50.
The shed has already been broken up in sections and smaller pieces of wood disposed of to facilitate collection.
I am a single person living on my own who is a full taxpayer. I find it absolutely appalling that I should have to pay such an extortionate sum of money to have a dismantled 6ft by 4ft shed
collected.
I have been living at the same address for four years now and have never until this point asked for anything to be collected from my home.
Is it any wonder that people resort to fly tipping when the council is charging such extortionate prices to remove items?
Name and address suppliedUpsetting to see so many rubbish piles I am a disabled pensioner and have lived in sheltered accommodation in Swansea Street, Preston for two years.
I am very happy here except for the eyesore amounts of rubbish left Tulketh Road.
I have noticed rats infesting this rubbish which makes the area a health hazard as well as an ugly site.
Surely something could be done to clear this mess? Somebody must be responsible for this area.
I can not get out much as I am disabled but being forced to look at this heap of rubbish complete with vermin from my living room is awful and upsetting.
Mrs H Carr, Swansea Street, PrestonPlenty of room for Big Ballet funI wish to comment on the strange review by Katy-Rose Meaney of the Big Ballet at the Charter Theatre.
Surely the best thing to do when you are reviewing anything is to do your research first.
Had she done so she would have known that the Big Ballet' was "a comedy ballet of weighty elegance and adorable humour".
She would have done better to bring her sense of humour along with her as well because she missed the point.
The show itself was very enjoyable if you did not take yourself or the cast too seriously.
They seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves and it is good to see that a group of larger women can be physically fit.
Yes, some of the costumes in the second half were over the top but would she have objected if they had been on smaller women?
I love conventional ballet but I also enjoyed this. There is room for all types of entertainment.
Pauline Gettins, City Views, PrestonPigs get distressed when forced to raceI read your website every day and think it is excellent. I was, however, distressed to see an article and video on pig racing.
By showing the video I feel that it legitimises this racing.
The article does not reflect the great opposition that there is to this pactice.
Pig racing causes the animals great distress. As pigs can't sweat and don't have the ability to pant like dogs they just overheat, so there's nothing more cruel than to have them racing in the afternoon sun.
Last year it was introduced at The Lancashire and Ribble Valley Countryside and Garden Festival. Despite strenuous efforts by animal welfare organisations such as Animal Aid it went ahead.
It is, for many people, highly immoral to use animals in this unnecessary way. I know that the Hospice does wonderful work and needs funds but I am sure that they do not want to have animals suffering in order to do so.
Julia Pilling, Bamber Bridge, via emailPaying for delayRegarding the protest of the Preston cabbies on Tuesday afternoon, can I thank them from the bottom of my heart for delaying my partner getting to hospital and missing his appointment while pursuing their greedy and selfish actions.
If you don't like the business then do something else.
