Bomb disposal experts have exploded an item in Avenham Park after a suspected mortar shell was found.
A member of the public found the object while using a metal detector earlier this afternoon, police said.
A section of the park was swiftly cordoned off.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts at the scene said it was quicker to explode the item, given its distance from any residential areas, than to try and remove it.
The discovery came just days before the park’s famous annual egg-rolling event.
Inspector Mike Charlton said: “They were not happy moving it and it wasn’t in a residential area, it was in the middle of countryside so this is one occasion where the safest option was to just blow it up.
“We got a call at 1.25pm from a member of the public using a metal detector on a ploughed field on Avenham Park.
“He found what he believed to be some sort of mortar. We attended and it looks like it might be, so EOD attended.
“We have a cordon in place to keep the public back and safe.”
