Pensioner dies after car veers off the road

A pensioner has died after his car veered off the road and crashed into a wall.

The crash, involving a red Ford Ranger, happened at around 10pm on Friday night in Accrington.

The car had turned off Eagle Street and on to Cannon Street when it is thought it hit three metal signposts before veering across the road on to the opposite side, colliding with a wall and a parked white Volkswagen Up.

The driver, named as 72-year-old Michael Lockwood, from Nelson, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are now appealing for witnesses.

Road Policing Sgt Tracey Ward said: “This is a tragic incident where a man has sadly died after what we suspect was a medical episode at the wheel. Our thoughts are with his family at this very sad and difficult time.

“We are still investigating this collision and I ask anyone who might have seen anything to get in touch.”
