The Hall Players of Preston start the year with their presentation of Perfect Murder by Hugh Janes, a thriller based on a short story by Jeffrey Archer.

Carla Moorland has been murdered and accountant John Hoskins – who has been having an extra-marital affair with her – is certain he knows who did it – himself. John’s wife Elizabeth, rather than calling for the police, is determined to keep John out of prison, even if it means an innocent man will be punished for the crime.

The Perfect Murder combines elements of the traditional whodunnit with tense courtroom drama to breath-taking effect.

The play runs from Thurs Jan 23 to Sat Jan 25 at 7.30pm each evening at St John’s Parish Hall, Broadway, Fulwood, Preston. Tickets are £7, £6 for concessions. Box Office 01772 863801.

Coming to the ROYAL COURT THEATRE, LIVERPOOL from Wed Jan 22 to Sat Feb 8 is Mary O’Malley’s classic play ONCE A CATHOLIC a dark comedy, set in a convent girls’ school in the mid-1950s days of O-Levels, sex and rock’n’roll.

The nuns at Our Lady of Fatima preach chastity and diligence as the Swinging Sixties approach. Final exams loom. The day of reckoning is nigh. For the girls in class 5A, their last year in uniform is set to be one of discovery of the less holy kind.

A brilliant play which has been variously described as shocking, disturbing and hilarious, it ran for two successful years in the West End. Directed by Kathy Burke (Nil By Mouth, Gimme Gimme Gimme, Harry Enfield).

Tickets range from £13 to £22 and, for an extra £10, you can dine at your table with a delicious meal before the show for an extra £10
