TV writer brings a modern spin to classic fairytale for theatre’s Christmas production

The Dukes in Lancaster will be presenting a new take on the classic fairytale, Cinderella as its Christmas production this year.

Performed in The Round, it has been adapted by the award-winning writer Ian Kershaw.

Set on a Northern farm, it tells the story of gutsy teenager, Ella, whose family have hit hard times and whose
sisters – recently relocated from Essex – are making life a misery.

With live music, songs and puppets the show, which runs from next Friday, November 28, until January 10, is aimed at families and children over the age of five.

It is the third Dukes Christmas production in The Round to be directed by Joe Sumsion who says: “It will be a funny, joyful piece of theatre with broad appeal.”

Ian Kershaw writes for stage, radio and television and his recent work includes episodes of Holby City, Eastenders, Casualty and Shameless.

Most recently he wrote Castles In The Sky, a BBC2 film starring Eddie Izzard as the father of radar.

His new radio comedy series Cleaning Up is due to air on Radio 4 early next year.

Ian is married to Julie Hesmondhalgh, who played Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street.

Cinderella will be played by Dukes newcomer Josie Cerise who grew up near Chorley and is part of the cast, is currently appearing in Grandpa in my Pocket on Cbeebies and also stars as Mini Ha Ha in the BAFTA-nominated Ha Ha Hairies on Cartoonito.
