The Southport branch will next week present a musical drama telling the tale of a 19th century sea disaster to raise funds for the cause.

The fund raising evening – at the resort’s West Lancs Yacht Club – will feature a presentation of Corkjackets and Drill, which tells the story, through songs and narration, of the 1886 Southport Lifeboat Disaster.

In an attempt to save the crew of German Ship The Mexico, in distress off Southport sands, almost all of the crews of the Southport and St Anne’s lifeboats died.

The songs and script are by Southport based playwright, Len Pentin, whose work has been performed at Liverpool’s top theatres, BBC Radio Merseyside and the London fringe.

The music will be played by Chris Nelson, Siobhan Nelson, Clive Pownceby, Pete Rimmer and Len Pentin, while actor Colin Wayte will narrate the piece.

The event, from 8.30pm this Wednesday, August 30, is free to enter with a collection being taken on the evening towards the work of the RNLI.
