A Lancashire woman’s £2 car boot sale purchase of a figurine scooped her more than £4,000 at an auction.

Helen Lambert, from Colne, brought along a Royal Doulton “Spook” figurine to the Flog It event at Blackpool Tower Circus in October 2012.

The item had been purchased for £2 at a car boot sale by her husband, David. The figurine caught the eye of long serving Flog It on screen expert James Lewis who selected it for filming and valued the item at £200 to £300, the figurine was put into auction with a reserve price of £180.

To everyone’s surprise when it went under the hammer at an auction house in Lytham St Annes, the opening bid was for £650 way above the reserve price of £180.

What followed was a bidding frenzy that saw the price of the items dramatically increase until the hammer fell and the lot was sold for an astonishing £4250! With both James Lewis and Helen Lambert left speechless at what had happened in the saleroom, everyone was keen to discover why this spooky little figurine sold for such a high figure.

It emerged that the lot was a very rare piece of Royal Doulton produced in 1922, it is believed that the figurines blue colour is a prototype glaze, much sought after by collectors which explains the astonishing sum it sold for.

Helen Lambert said: “When David bought the figure home from the car boot sale I didn’t like it at all. I was totally shocked when it sold for so much at auction, I think this sort of thing is a only once in a lifetime thing to happen to people and we don’t expect it to happen again”.

Louise Hibbins, series producer of Flog It, said: “The whole team were delighted for Helen and David when the Spook sold for such a high price at auction. Flog It really is full of surprises and that’s what makes it so enjoyable to watch, uncovering such a rare piece of Royal Doulton is certainly an exciting start to our twelfth series of the show”.

The edition of Flog It featuring the Royal Doulton Spook Figurine will be shown on Monday, April 7, at 4.30pm on BBC one.
