Theatre bosses are urging people to donate to their appeal to fix the roof at Preston Playhouse.

The Raising the Roof appeal was launched last month to repair the roof of the building in Market Street West - so far just over £2,000 has been raised.

The Playhouse needs to raise £20,000 for the work

In total improvements, estimated to cost £50,000, need to be carried out.

The playhouse already has £30,000 in reserves - but needs to raise the extra cash.

Chairman of Preston Playhouse Board of Trustees Alex Tagg, said: “We received a number of offers of donations from private individuals, some of them members, past and present, of the societies that use the Playhouse, others who attend the performances as patrons.

“A particularly generous donation of £500 has been received from The Longton Players, who for many years have taken part in the One Act Festival which takes place at the theatre each June.

“Patrons attending shows at the theatre have been fulsome in their support of the raffles being held to raise funds.

“The current total from donations and other fund raising is £2,870.”

Alex added: “Applications for grants have been submitted to a number of organisations and replies are awaited.

“Preston Musical Comedy Society and Preston Opera have offered their support for our fundraising shows and we are now moving into that phase.

“The first show will be ‘Kings of Comedy’ on Saturday at the theatre, and this look at our famous comics of the past is selling out fast.”

Kings of Comedy has been devised and presented by Jeff Brailsford.

The show will see Jeff tell the stories of the great comics of the past, and recalls, and pinches, the best bits of their acts.

Jeff is well known locally both as a lawyer and for his performances and productions at Preston Playhouse.

He has been involved in the theatre, mainly in drama, for some 40 years as a performer, director and adjudicator.

The show will be held at The Playhouse at 7.30pm on Saturday. Tickets are £7.

The show is one of two fundraising events that are in the pipeline.

The second, a Raising the Roof variety show, will be held between April 4 and 6.

For tickets or more information call the Box Office on 01772 744771.

If the cash is raised to fix the roof the work will be carried out in July and August during the theatre’s closed season.
