Centre is fully open
The new UCLan Dental Clinic and health centre is fully operational,providing a full range of services to the local Preston community and North West region. It was set up to help fully qualified dentists enrolled on programmes within UCLan’s School of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education to gain clinical experience in a range of advanced dental and medical procedures. At present it offers private dental care to the public.
Visit centre for models
More than 60 model boats will be on show during two model weekends. Martin Mere Wetland Centre, in Burscough, will be hosting a Model Train Show on January 26 and 27, and a Model Boat Show on February 9 and 10. Local societies will be bringing boats, tanks and an 8ft aircraft carrier and nine large train layouts, including a giant Lego train set. Normal admission charges apply at the model boat and train show and there is no extra charge to take part in the event.
Cash plan for postal branch
A post office plans to install a cash point for customers. Sharoe Green Post Office on Garstang Road, Fulwood, has applied for planning permission,
Hot food idea for businessman
A businessman wants to set up a mobile takeaway in Preston. Vaheed Khan is seeking planning consent to site the hot food trailer on land to the rear of Moor Lane.
Ladies see in the New Year with a bike ride
Kick start the New Year with a ladies-only bike ride around Preston on Friday, January 11. Ladies are being encouraged to join in the nine mile bike ride along the canal and River Ribble as part of British Cycling’s Breeze project to encourage more women to take up cycling. The route will include Haslam Park, Ashton Park and the Guild Wheel and will include a mixture of cycle paths and quiet roads. Meet at the University of Central Lancashire, Victoria Street, Preston, at the bike compound between Harrington and Greenbank building at 11.30am. Call 07703 029748 for more information.
People invited to auditions
Preston Musical Comedy Society will starts rehearsals for a new show. The group is appealing for new members to join and fill out the cast of their next venture, musical comedy A Slice of Saturday Night. The show opens at Preston Playhouse, in Market Street West, from April 23. An introduction night is being held on Monday, January 7, at 7.30pm at Harris Primary, Wychnor, off Lightfoot Lane, Fulwood. All are welcome.
Event to get young people into work
An event will be held for young people out of work. Youngsters from South Ribble and Chorley can talk to local organisations including the Princes Trust, Pro-soccer Academy and Runshaw Training at an event on January 15. ‘Fresh 13’ will run from 3pm to 6pm at ‘The Arts Partnership’ on Railway Street, Chorley, and is being organised by Lancashire County Council. The activities are aimed at people aged 16 to 19 who are not in employment, education or training, or who have just finished school or college.
Success for pop-up city bar
A pop-up bar will open for another two weeks after its success. The Continental’s Tundra Bar, which is on Harris Street, off the Flag Market, was opened over Christmas. Bosses behind the outdoor venture say it was such a success they will now keep it open until Sunday, January 13, from noon each day. The bar will however be closed today. Entry is free.
Cigarette in house blaze
An electric cigarette sparked a blaze at a home. Fire crews were called to Brentlea Crescent in Heysham at 10.50am on Saturday where an electric cigarette which had been left on charge set fire to a pile of clothing. Firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to check the blaze had not spread.
Electricity fire at city flat
Fire crews were called after an electrical fire started at a flat in Preston. Firefighters used special equipment at the flat, on Samuel Street, Fishwick, to isolate the electricity supply at around 5.30pm on Saturday.
