A rapper is aiming to put Preston on the map after name checking areas of his hometown in a song quickly becoming an internet sensation.

Sol Tucker, aka Scepz, from Ashton, recorded a cover of American singer Lil’ Kim’s 2005 single ‘Lighters Up’.

The 23-year-old’s version, titled ‘Welcome to Preston’, was released on YouTube at the end of last year, where it has since had nearly 17,000 views.

The video sees the former Our Lady’s Catholic High School pupil name drop the likes of “Ashtown”, and “Tanny and Ingol”, while tackling social and political issues like crime and the ‘Americanisation’ of UK youth culture.

He said: “The Lil’ Kim original uses areas in New York.

“I literally woke up one day hungover at a mate’s house and it was on MTV Base.

“I put on my Facebook that I’d like to do a Preston version and got loads of likes, so I thought ‘wow, people want to hear this’, so I recorded it.

“It’s had a great response. Everyone was buzzing and a lot of people commented on the video saying ‘I’m glad you shouted out where I’m from’.

“A few people said I can’t believe you didn’t mention this place or that place, people in Penwortham and Kingsfold, but I’ve never considered those areas as Preston, Preston, if you know what I mean!”

Scepz developed his reputation across the city as a grime music MC, before focusing his attention on hip hop.

He said: “A lot of hip hop albums have got me through tough situations, so a lot of my music is ‘conscious’ hip hop - you won’t find so much about lots of money, cars and girls.

“It’s more real life - I just write my life down.”

The rapper, who is working at The Original Barber Shop in Ashton while studying for a music degree at the University of Salford, said the impressive video was filmed and edited by DYMedia, a thriving production company set up by Daniel Brown, from Walton-le-Dale.
