A singer who won numerous competitions as a teenager across Lancashire is stepping back into the limelight.
Melanie Waite, now 23, came top in the Chorley’s Fame Factor competition when she was a student at Balshaw’s CE High School, and also impressed during other contests around Lancashire when she was younger.
And after venturing to Amsterdam to record music before taking a break to have a baby, she’s back in her hometown and ready to take to the stage once again.
She said: “I became semi-professional after I left school. I did pubs, clubs and weddings, and through a competition I met a man called Glen Robertson, who put me in touch with the Blackpool Ice Shows.
“I recorded a few tracks which were played during the ice-skating shows, so that was a bit surreal.
“Then I did a few songs in Amsterdam at his house.
“That was Euro pop stuff, and my songs were played in a few clubs in Holland.”
She took a break after that to have her son, Charlie, and moved to Preston where she worked behind a bar for a while, but she’s settled back in Leyland now with new partner Matt Baker, and feels now is the time to get back to doing what she loves.
“I’m starting from scratch really,” she said.
“I’m trying to build up my profile again and I’m ringing round trying to get gigs.
“My dad, Stephen Waite, is my manager, and he’s got a few things in the pipeline for me.
“I’m really excited about it all.
“I’m going back to doing soul and Motown, which is the type of music I was brought up with.
“It’s my dad’s influence, he instilled a passion in me, and I just love doing it.
“I never lost my love for that.”
