A huge music festival could be held in Preston later this year.

Details are being drawn up for a large scale event called Prestival to take place in Avenham Park in September.

The aim of the music event is to celebrate today’s current music scene and although organisers are remaining tight lipped over the exact line up there is a promise of ‘recognisable names’ coming to the city.

The idea of the festival is the brain child of Rick Moore, 47, from Bamber Bridge.

Rick has recently set up the Prestival Community Interest Company and hopes to feature local talent and rising stars at the festival.

He said: “There really is a thriving local music scene in Preston, it is bubbling under the surface and it just needs something. People seem interested. We have everything we need in place except the funding.

“The idea is to bring Preston together as a community. We are looking to unite all the local talent and have five or six well known names.”

The festival, planned for September 20, will have a main stage and a dance tent. The fine details are still being worked on and the organisers are in discussions with Preston Council.

Prestival bosses hope the event will attract thousands of people into the city.

Coun Drew Gale who represents the Town Centre ward said: “I am provisionally very supportive of it. Anything that brings commerce and entertainment to the city centre is a good idea. I look forward to hearing further details.”

The Mayor of Preston Coun Veronica Afrin added: “It all sounds very good, having an idea and getting it into fruition is quite hard to do. If it was entertainment there for anybody we would want to encourage it.”

Tim Joel, events manager at Preston Council, said: “We have been approached with a proposal for a weekend music event and we are working with the organiser to test the feasibility before making a decision.

“Events of this nature take a lot of organisation and resources and the council has to be satisfied that the organiser has the plans and resources in place in order to support such an event.”
