Fast food favourites like Ronald McDonald will be "assassinated" if junk food ads are banned from TV.
That's the view of Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans, who spoke out in defence of the characters in the House of Commons.

He has now been accused of putting fast food giant McDonald's ahead of the nation's children, after he joined fellow Tory MPs to attack legislation aimed at tackling childhood obesity.

A private member's bill from Labour MP Nigel Griffiths called for all TV adverts for junk food to be banned before 9pm.

MP Evans asked: "Does the honourable gentleman really want to go down in history as the man who killed Ronald McDonald? Other characters such as Tony the Tiger and Honey Monster would be assassinated in one fell swoop."

Mr Griffiths replied: "I don't want to go down in history as the person who put the health of our advertising industry and of McDonald's before the health of our children."

Mr Griffiths said the adverts undermined parental efforts to control children's consumption of sugary or fatty foods.

MP Evans asked: "Does the honourable gentleman really want to go down in history as the man who killed Ronald McDonald?"
To which most adult Britons would have replied: "Pass me a rifle."
Evans and the Tories show their true colours. As does Gordon Brown, who could ban these ads tomorrow if he wanted. Clearly a clown lover too.

Ah, another tiresome assault against something that causes no harm if proper parental and/or self responsibility is taken.

"Ban" McDonalds adverts and you should also ban every single advert for any type of restaurant or any type of ready made meal/sauce etc. etc.

Banning these adverts only panders to the "It's not my fault" brigade.

Every single advert which presents eating junk as a fun game while cynically offering free toys, yes. Preferable to lecturing children on their lack of self-control while watching the spiralling costs of childhood obesity drag the NHS under.

Bang on the money again Barnfarm, and Jonh is his usual self.

Personally I'd have Ron MacJunkfood publicly executed.

i am a a childrens football coach and run m,y own company in the area and i find it DISGUSTING that the F.A. proudly has McDonalds sponsor them and in particular grass roots football.
with kids being very impressionable added to the fact that the big M logo is in the background of almost every post match interview etc, its almost like saying 'great we've had a kickabout in McDonald's sponsored bibs so now lets go and eat one and get fatter'.
its an absolute disgrace
