A fire brigade has been forced to defend its decision to use a crew of seven and two engines to rescue a trapped seagull as "the humane thing to do".
The bird was stuck in netting on top of a factory in Bridgwater, Somerset, and freed after an hour using a hydraulic lift at an estimated cost of £800.
The fire service said tonight that it was performing a public duty, but the Taxpayers' Alliance, a charity which defends the interests of taxpayers, said the outlay "beggared belief".
