A phantom caller has left a bemused Lancashire couple hanging on the telephone...again.
Fed-up Steve and Yvonne Tanner are mystified why they keep being landed with debt recovery notices, along with demands to pay charges for a phone line they do not have.
It first happened in March – leading red-faced British Telecom chiefs to issue a grovelling apology.
But the Tanners have since received new bills demanding payments of £179 and £159 along with threats that they are set to be black-listed for non-payment.
The bills also threaten that the phantom phone line will be disconnected if they fail to cough up the cash.
Mr Tanner, who lives at Beacon Fell View Holiday Park, Longridge, said: "I'm thinking of taking them to court. The stress that it causes is unreal.
"I keep trying to phone them about it but their lines are always engaged.
"The debt recovery notice says they are going to put us on a black list.
"But we have no debt, we don't even have a phone line."
The bills started coming after the couple tried to get a phone line installed earlier in the year.
But an engineer failed to show and they thought the matter was over.
Soon after, BT began sending bills starting with a £125 installation bill and a £40 line rental charge.
When the Lancashire Evening Post first investigated, BT apologised and promised to sort out the mess.
But with new bills, the phone company has said sorry once more to the couple – this time with flowers.
BT media relations manager Amy Walker said: "We would like to apologise for any inconvenience or distress they have experienced.
"I can advise that all incorrectly raised charges have now been removed.
"A customer service advisor has arranged to send flowers and a gift as a further apology."
