The wife of a popular motorcyclist killed in an accident has spoken of her "special and gentle" husband.
BAE Systems worker Ian Bottomley, 52, died after the collision which happened on the A683 Hornby to Melling road, near Lancaster, at 11am on Saturday.

The executive, who worked in Samlesbury, is survived by his two twin daughters Sally and Jenny, 17-month-old grand daughter Emma Louise, and his wife of 28 years, Ann.

Ann, of The Maltings in Longton, said he was a "wonderful husband, father and grandfather and one in a million."

She said: "We had been together for 28 years, since we were 16, and he was a very special person. He was a loving, caring and clever man with a cheeky sense of fun.

"He loved going out on his bike. He had been riding since he was 17 and we often went out on it together."

The couple both originate from the Halifax area but have lived in Longton for the past 26 years.

Police have made an appeal for witnesses to the accident.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police, said: "At this time, police do not believe any other vehicles were involved but enquiries are ongoing and witnesses are sought."

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact Lancaster Police on 01524 63333, quoting reference number 1209.

This is a favourite road with bikers on their way to Devil's Bridge at Kirkby Lonsdale. I know. I was one of them. It's a pity so many young (and not so young) lives are cut short on motor bikes, and - although I'm not familiar with this particular case - most tragedies are not the fault of the biker but of others who just don't realize how vulnerable we are on two wheels. It's much harder to stop in an emergency, we're harder to see and in a collision it's always the biker who comes off worst. :-(

My thoughts are with the family at this tragic time.
Looking at the picture of Ian above to me he looks as though he is a more mature therefore a more experienced biker so I doubt the accident was his fault.
I have been a biker for many years and the amount of car drivers that have nearly knocked me off my bike is unbelievable. Some car drivers just don't realise that a bike has as much right to be on the road as a car, and the amount of idiots that have purposely tried to push me out into the middle of the road when I am filtering through traffic (which bikes are allowed to do) is pathetic. Next time they do their car will be on the receiving end of my Sidi boot.

Post 3 the reason bikes "sit on your shoulder" is so myopic muppets such as you see them in your mirror.(If you ever bother to look in it except for applying lippy) They are involved in so many collisions because of a lack of observation from other road users just like you.

My thoughts are with the family at this tragic, I'm a pedal cyclist and we often use this road I'd like to think we get respect from the motocyclist as we to subject to many a near miss with motorist, they do not give us time or space when overtaking, all we and motocyclist want is a little respect.
