Preston's roads are not fit for purpose and in need of urgent improvement, a major study reveals today.
The Evening Post's Great Transport Debate poll of motorists and residents across Lancashire has unveiled a snapshot of motorists frustration with the city's increasingly beleagured highways.
An overwhelming 85% of people believe there are too many roadworks, while the same number believe they have been badly managed.
Parking is insufficient and too expensive and the city's increasingly bitter bus wars is putting people off public transport, the figures reveal.
Earlier this year the Evening Post ran a week long series of special investigations into Lancashire's transport system.
It found that soaring public transport costs dwarfed the cost of commuting by car, leading commentators to suggest it is little wonder the majority still choose to brave the queues and roadworks.
The findings also come on the back of increasing pressure on Preston's transport network which last year moved police to claim the roads are at breaking point.
Horrendous congestion caused by roadworks is costing businesses and taxpayers millions and even endangering victims of crime as they prevent the emergency services from responding to incidents on time.
Today, as calls were made for Preston's transport system to figure as a major feature of the city's regeneration plans, we spoke to a selection of the city's movers, shakers and campaigners about what they made of the findings...
