Ring Way work clogs up city traffic

Preston's bus service has been thrown into chaos, with huge traffic jams now clogging the streets as roadworks choke the city centre.
Bus operators report rows of up to 11 buses queuing nose-to-tail on Fishergate in the city centre, unable to turn onto Ring Way, where major roadworks are causing huge delays.

Work on an improved pedestrian crossing on Friargate, at the junction with Ring Way, started on August 14 and is expected to last until November 18.

The ongoing work means temporary lane closures have been put in place on Ring Way between 9.30am and 3pm, as well as some evenings, in an attempt to minimise rush hour disruption.

But Peter Bell, managing director of Preston Bus, said it has seriously affected services.

He said: "It has been going on for weeks and I have had people saying to me several times that there are 11 buses on Fishergate.

"They just cannot get back out onto Ring Way.

"We have been running 15 minutes later each departure. People are getting frustrated – they don't always understand what causes it.

"If you are stuck at Penwortham you do not know necessarily why.

"In the morning peak it is not too bad but at other times – half
past two on a Friday, for example, town is very busy."

Aidan Turner-Bishop from the Campaign for Better Transport, said: "Sometimes they are running 15 to 30 minutes late. It is having a knock-on effect throughout the system.

"When they do these things they could think about having better signposted diversions. They should be a bit more proactive about it.

"Stick a notice and say do not even think about driving down Ring Way on these days."

When the work is complete, pedestrians will be able to cross Ring Way to Friargate in one go, rather than being forced to wait in the middle of the road.

It is also hoped the granite crossing will boost trade, particularly in Friargate Brow.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council, said: "The contract currently on site started mid-August and is due to complete on November 18.

"The objective is to re-signalise the junction as part of the Civitas works. In doing so, we will be removing some of the street furniture and providing a more compact but open junction.

"This will involve re-alignment of kerbs, modifications to pedestrian crossings and provision of new granite paving. We apologise for any inconvenience."

This is a minuscule piece of work compared with the Tithebarn, yet this is the level of disruption it causes in our car-clogged city.

The Council leaders' promises that Tithebarn will not make Preston grind to a halt look foolish - if we are to solve Preston's traffic gridlock then we need more bus and other public transport services, not a smaller bus station.

A serious lack of planning going on here. It took me over 30 minutes to get from near Blockbusters on the ringroad to near Winckley Sq at 1pm on Friday - a total joke. All this for the sake of a pedestrian crossing! There didn't seem to be an issue with the crossings in the first place. They really need to get their act together - why the hell can't they just do it at night when it will cause no disruption.

Do you really think things will improve when they finish the work? The work is for "an improved pedestrian crossing on Friargate. When the work is complete, pedestrians will be able to cross Ring Way to Friargate in one go, rather than being forced to wait in the middle of the road." No doubt this will cause permanent congestion on this busy route through the town. I suggest you abandon Preston Centre in favour of out of town shopping.

I am a driver for Preston Bus and these roadworks are a joke - all that money wasted just so that people can cross the road in one go!why dig the road up to achieve this - the timings of the traffic lights can be altered by computer.A fine example of tax payers money going down the drain - revamp the bus station is the way forward - it will be chaos when it moves to church street, just wait!

pike you got it right, why not have a smaller trafford style centre up near fulwood easing the town centre and building a small bus station there, thus leaving everything in the town centre the way it is and the bus station intact,,,optair, peter bell must be pullin his hair out about all the roadworks and stupid little crossings that cause soo much havock, bein a bus driver must be hell at the moment and i bet a lot of customers blame the drivers apart from the ones that know the situation

BRIG! I think they had some money left over in the budget and decided to dig a hole, only now they've lost it?
Seriously though post 1 is spot on.
Why are they not looking to move the "ring road" out of the city centre?

Notlob,

Preston..where else! 29/09/2008 15:24:59
Place road work signs well in advance to give drivers a chance to find/work out an alternative route.
As this is a main artery route through Preston, light it up and do the work at night?

Also, this is the result of making a ring road through a City Centre, and not around it!!

"if we are to solve Preston's traffic gridlock then we need more bus and other public transport services"

We need more buses, yet there are masses of...er....buses queued up! What "other" services? Trams will need the roads all digging up.
