The drink-driving limit should be lowered to slash the number of accidents on Lancashire's roads, says the county's new road safety boss.
Steve Whitehouse, project manager at the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety, says just one unit of alcohol – about half a pint of beer –makes people a "liability" behind the wheel.

He is calling for a major debate on the legal limit in a bid to bring the UK into line with the rest of Europe.

But he stopped short of saying the country should adopt a zero-tolerance approach.

He said: "After one unit of alcohol, people's risk actually doubles.
Even after one unit of alcohol people become a liability on the road.

"We are not necessarily pushing for zero tolerance because there are issues around that, but we need people to realise you can't just think of these magical figures: You can't think I have had two halves so I'll have another.

"Legally you may be able to but your actual risk increases.

"It is something I think we would have to debate on. Most of Europe has a lower alcohol limit now than the UK and I know we have been working with the Government at national level and regionally to at least try to get a debate going about what that level should be because we want people to be able to enjoy alcohol sensibly."

Mr Whitehouse, who last week said speed cameras were here to stay on Lancashire's roads, says a zero tolerance approach could lead to problems – because if people drink the night before or take some forms of medication, low levels of alcohol could show up on a breath test.

But he added: "I personally would support a move to reduce the drink drive limit. I would not want to come up with a figure at the moment because a lot of research needs to be done on what that figure should be."

In 2005, the latest figures available, 2,723 people were convicted of drink driving in Lancashire.

Habitual drink drivers are high risk as are habitual speedsters.

Why waste resources targeting yet more responsible motorists with indiscriminate bans and fines?

It's not just about how many units it's about how it affects each person. Mr Whitehouse's statement that everybody becomes a liability after 1 unit is a ridiculous generalisation. I suspect Lewis Hamilton would still be a better driver after a unit of alcohol that most of the incompetent sober idiots I see on a daily basis. How about working on a way of testing how affected by alcohol drivers are rather than how much they have drunk?

I think it's about time that we had a ZERO drink drive limit. I realise this will do nothing to stop those drivers who constantly drink excess amounts of alcohol , but hopefully it will make the light drinkers think again. It is time that the law was updated and a sliding scale of punishment introduced, this would then end the hap hazard system currently in place and would force judges to issue consistent penalties.

How about a sustained high profile campaign targeting those who continue to flout the current drink drive limits. Lowering the limit will not prevent the habitual morons who regularly drink in excess of the current limits and drive. These people break the existing law, what makes anyone think they will take any notice of a new law? Stricter enforcement of the current law is needed not the lowering of the current limit.

"I think it's about time that we had a ZERO drink drive limit."

If you re-read the article, you'll find that this is actually impossible. A breath test will pick up the alcohol in mouthwash for example.

It is, however, interesting to note the penultimate paragraph in this article where it is clearly shown that this whole thing is pure speculation on Mr Whitehouse's part. Perhaps he needs to actually try doing what he is paid for as I suspect "Appearing in the LEP every day" wasn't in his job description. (Though I seriously wonder what actually was....)

I agree with DCH, but how could we test this? I say give the driver a Newhall Lane doner kebab to eat. If they spew after one bite they're probably sober. Should they finish it they're clearly blotto.

Never, ever should anyone get behind the wheel of a vehicle and drive when they have had any booze! The drink drive units should be binned and like Post #6 said ZERO TOLERANCE.Those who disobey more than once, crush their vehicle and send them to prison! Oh while i am at it,shred their driving license and ban them from driving for life!

Zero tolerence sound a good idea, but consider your average mature law obiding citizen having a couple of pints with his wife at a country restaurant on a sunday afternoon having a couple of quiet pints, he have to make his wife drive home again because he now has had 8 pints and 3 yeager meisters and has spewed in the toilets at the Derby Arms in Thornley.

Foget about putting a limit on what amount of alcohol a person should be allowed to consume if driving, even if the limit is 1 unit or 10 units (to be honest i dont know wat the actual limit is) they need to sort out the criminial justice system and adequetly punish the people over the limit, injuring and even killing others because they had that one too many!! Car manufacturers can make a difference, you get cruise control and automatic this and that then why cant they have a contraption in a vehicle where if you are over a certain limit your car doesnt start at all, if your over you can sit in your car and sober up.
