A man has died and four other people injured in a horror smash on the A59 opposite the entrance to BAE Systems in Lancashire.
The crash involved a BMW 5 series, a Peugeot and an HGV on a bend on Whalley Road in Samlesbury at around 1.20pm on Thursday.

A section of the road was closed at the Swallow Hotel until 6.06pm while accident investigators remained at the scene.

The male driver of the BMW died and a female passenger - from Blackpool - was taken by air ambulance to Royal Preston Hospital (RPH) with head and leg injuries. Both are thought to be in their early 20s.

It took firefighters half-an-hour to cut the woman free from the wreckage.

The BMW was believed to be travelling on the wrong side of the road when it crashed.

A Peugeot, carrying two women, crashed into the back of the BMW and they were taken to RPH suffering minor injuries.

The driver of the truck, thought to be in his late 40s and from Bolton, was taken to the Royal Blackburn Infirmary with minor injuries.

The vehicle, which is used to carry steel, was empty at the time of the crash.

A Lancashire ambulance service spokesman said: "There were quite a lot of paramedics there treating them at the time."

This is a lethal stretch of road, fatalities have occurred here in the past.
It is NOT a place where overtaking should be attempted under any cicumstances.

I travel this road three times a week with my 10 year old son, It frightens me sometimes at the speed individuals go to overtake other cars even approaching the bends. I saw the air ambulance approach the scene today and I shuddered at the thought of what might have happened, please everyone slow down and consider other road users that don't want to gamble with their lives.

Tragic! This stretch used to be called"coroners corridor",they did away with a middle overtaking lane, because of numerous accidents. Its such a long straight,i think people do put their foot down.Locals like myself who know this section of road, luckily, drive accordingly. This sounds like a lack of judgement rather than bad driving,i hope so.A man has died and its awful, hope the injured recover.
