A driver had a lucky escape when his car careered across the road, hit a lamppost and careered down an embankment.
A rescue operation was launched at 7.40pm on Friday when the accident happened on the Preston-bound side of Golden Way in Penwortham, near Preston.

Police were concerned there may have been someone else in the Renault Megane who had been catapulted out.

The force helicopter and dogs were called out to search the area but no-one was found.

Crew manager Dominic Fellows from Penwortham fire station, said: "He was extremely, extremely lucky to get out and he was equally lucky he didn't hit anyone coming the other way.

"The car was written off."

A Lancashire Police spokeswoman said a 21-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of aggravated taking of a vehicle and driving licence offences.
