A man was in a serious condition in hospital after being hit by a double decker bus on a Lancashire road.
Peter Gaskell, 31, was crossing Station Road in Bamber Bridge at 6.50pm yesterday when he collided with the Stagecoach bus.

He suffered what police described as "life threatening" head injuries and remained in the intensive care unit at Royal Preston Hospital in a "poorly" condition.

Mr Gaskell, of Alma Row, Hoghton, was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Police sealed off Station Road for more than four hours after the incident with forensic officers scouring the crash site.

Witnesses described seeing officers shining torches underneath the bus which was stationary in the road at an angle.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: "This gentleman was crossing the road from the nearside when he was in collision with the double decker bus which was travelling towards Leyland.

"He received serious injuries and his condition is currently described as poorly."

The driver of the 125 Stagecoach North West service to Chorley was treated at the scene for shock but declined hospital treatment.

Police have appealed for anybody who witnessed the collision to contact them by calling 01772 203203.

bloody bus drivers. they dont care. I couldnt beleive it last night when i saw a Preston Bus overtake a car doing the legal 30 mph on blackpool rd, by crossing over to the wrong side of the road - if the car hadnt slowed down he would have an oncomming car!

Station Rd is pretty alarming to drive down, and difficult to cross. Far too much traffic, poorly parked vehicles, lorries, side streets, blind spots galore.

I've every sympathy for all concerned in this tragedy, and suggest that we wait for all the evidence to emerge before apportioning blame anywhere.

Firstly I hope the gentleman makes a complete recovery and I agree completely with your comments River.

pnefan you can't tar every bus driver with the same brush. My friend is a bus driver and they've had loads of compliments re their driving and courtesy off passengers. Bus drivers are taught to do a controlled stop not an emergency stop. Can you imagine the weight of a bus pushing forward if one does an emergency stop? A car can skid on doing an emergency stop and it's not got half as much weight behind it that a bus has. I sometimes don't think that people who drive cars give the respect which a bus deserves...they don't realise how difficult it is to manoveure such a vehicle and expect them to do the same as a small car.

I hope Mr Gaskell pulls through. I agree with posts #3 and #4 i use Station rd quite a lot and have seen a lot of near accidents with people and vehicles, now this poor man has been hurt. We must wait to see what happened, and hope that Station rd can be safe to drive on and cross the road for people on foot, i am also alarmed about some drivers who flout the speed limit,as the police don,t give a fig about, they see them but just ignore them and drive on! This i have seen with my own eyes a few times.
