A motorcyclist has died after being involved in a crash on a Lancashire motorway.
The crash, which is not thought to have involved any other vehicles, happened on the M61 northbound at junction 8, Brindle, at approximately 9pm on Wednesday.

It is believed the rider lost control of his cycle and ploughed into the central reservation.

Two lanes of the motorway were closed northbound and one lane closed southbound, while police officers investigated the incident.

Officers are now looking at whether the rider may have been driving too fast.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the road policing unit at Lancashire Police on 08451 253545.

I think bikes should be banned from the roads. They are too dangerous. They are built for speed and often riders go too fast and take uneccessary risks!

Should we ban all cars as well then. They are also built for speed and their drivers often go too fast and take unnecessary risks!!!!

The difference between a car crashing into the central reservation and a bike is the person in the car is surrounded by a metal box!!!!

How ofter do you drive along the motorway and see several cars so close together that you couldnt get another car between them, therefore not having enough braking distance.

I think that you have agreed with jatty, i.e. bikes are not safe for the reason that you state, you have no protection. Given the same circumstances in a crash a bike rider will obviously come off far worse than a car driver. Also a bike is far more difficult to stop (safely) in an emergency than a car is. The stats tell us that you are 40 times more likely to die on a motorbike than in a car. I think that banning them is extreme but the loss of life is frightening and something needs to be done.

thankyou Brianjc. Of course bikes are more dangerous than cars thats quite obvious...Lizb think you contradicted yourself there!!!!,perhaps banning them is extreme but having been victim to a bike accident and having a relative die from one i cannot see any other option. I only said banned from the roads, perhaps there could be tracks where people who wish to drive at idiotic speeds and nearly kill themselves can go and put their own lives at risk without risking anyone else!

I have been the victim of a serious car/bike accident that was caused by the car driver (found guilty by the courts) so i do know how dangerous bikes can be. I still ride a bike through my choice. We are lucky enough to live in a country where we have freedom to choose.

I know that some bike accidents are caused by speed but so are fatal car accidents. How many multiple vehicle pile ups on the motorways are caused by cars compared to bikes? My point is that cars can be as dangerous, if not more so to other road users/pedestrians, on the road in the wrong hands. There are more stringent tests for the high powered motorbikes, where as a 17-year old newly passed car driver can get in a 911 (or any other high powered sports car) the day after passing their test - you cant do the same with a bike. And the tests are becoming more stringent this year for a bike licence. I agree with added tests for ALL road users to improve safety.

My heart goes out to the family of the biker killed, as it does to any person killed in a road accident.
