We went to UCLan on one of its busiest days, the Fresher's Fair, and asked new students what their first impressions were of UCLan, of Preston and what their hopes for the future were.
Emma Varney, 19, from Milton Keynes, studying Business Information Technology:
"Up north everybody is so friendly. It seems like a really nice place and there's a lot to do."
Charlene Jumbo, 23, from Essex, studying Fashion and Brand Promotion:
"When I first got here I was quite nervous, as you are, but everyone is really friendly and chatty, and it just seems that everyone outside of London is so much more friendly than everyone inside London."
Krishna Murjytayya, 70, from Preston, postgraduate student, Software
Engineering:
"I used to be a student here when it was a polytechnic, I studied law here in 1989. When I finish I want to work in either Australia or Delmont. When you say you are retired you are degrading yourself so retirement is not in my dictionary."
Samantha Chu, 23, from the Wirral, postgraduate student, Social Work:
"I've only been here for a couple of days but it seems all right, a lot
quieter than I thought it would be. I am in halls with a load of undergraduate students so it can get a bit rowdy."
Brendan Harris, 18, from Preston, studying International Business Studies:
"I want to meet more people from Preston and hopefully get some good grades so I can get a good career one day. I would like to work in America but I'll have to see what comes."
Nick Hill, 18, from Preston, studying Chemistry:
"I hope to met more people of different cultures, more people from around the world and more people from Preston. Afterwards I'm thinking of looking at
teaching."
Wen Xiao Rong, 19, from China, studying International Business Studies:
"When I first came here I thought the weather was good, but after a week I thought the weather was so bad. The main difference between China and Preston is that I think Preston has more opportunities for students. We can do some volunteering and part-time work, so in the UK I am not only learning through academic knowledge but also through experience."
