A Lancashire student has won the 2008 Southport Flower Show Student Garden Design competition.
Peter Cowell's design reflected the contest's theme of Liverpool, to support the city being European Capital of Culture in his design.

Myerscough College student Peter, from Mawdesley, won £5,000 to design his own garden and a further £1,000 in prize money.

He researched the city's history for his design, which reflects old and new Liverpool and uses water features to represent the famous Mersey.

The garden will be on show from August 21 to 24.

Peter, 23, said: "I'm delighted to have won such a prestigious competition. I love going to Southport Flower Show, and I hope visitors enjoy seeing my garden."

Also in the show is an entry from Preston's Silk Hall Garden Design by RHS Gold medallist Jill Brindle.

The garden was designed in conjunction with Greenbelt landscapes from Ingleton.
