Thousands of students from Preston, dressed as porn stars, are set to invade bars and clubs as part of a giant pub crawl.
But not everyone is pleased with the city being chosen as a starting point for the event called Carnage UK which is expected to attract up to 3,000 students from the University of Central Lancashire.

A senior police officer and the Students' Union have criticised the plans.

More than 1,000 people have already signed up to a social networking site webpage about the event.

Some have left comments about how they passed out and ended up in hospital after the last Carnage event they went to.

Insp Steve Evans, of Preston city centre police, said: "It's not a good idea.

"These are 18-year-old kids, usually coming away from home for the first time, and they are not used to that level of consumption.

"It's not illegal to have a pub crawl but I would prefer it would not take place."

Great, let 'em do it, its all part of being a fresher. Just dont hold me responsible for my actions when they stumble into me because they can't handle their drink.

Firstly UCLan isn't a polytechnic so get with the times!

Secondly the students contribute a great deal to the local economy when they are here and if the police are aware of the event and what date it will be held why don't they just have more officers on that day so they can be there to oversee it?

Thirdly the event is being held in Blackpool so maybe the LEP should get the details correct before they go to press!

They might 'contribute to the local economy' but they certainly don't contribute to local council tax that has to pay police wages & people to clean up the streets afterwards.

I'm a student, & I personally wouldn't go on Carnage. But some people would. And to be honest, students are going to cause less trouble than hordes of chavs out & about.

This article should mention that the event is being held in Blackpool, with coaches going from Preston as that is where the students live...its not going to be in any of the pubs/bars in Preston (because if I remember rightly they're not allowed to do it in Preston). Also, Carnage is done at uni cities across the UK, not just Preston as the article implies...

Yeah, well I'll settle for the fact that UCLan has prevented Preston becoming a scumhole like Burnley any day of the week.

I assume from your posting that you may have attended the "Polytechnic of Central Lancs"???
As for more Police on duty? well pardon me, but with a damn large council tax bill to pay each month, i'd much prefer to see my money spent more wisely as far as Lancashire Constabulary is concerned, like putting more of the beggers on the local streets, then on Blackpool prom watching students making pratts of them selves !!!

I've had to deal with two pill-ed up students recently; there is clearly an issue with drug pushers in and around the student frequented bars. Get that sorted police!
