Manager of the Month Alan Irvine is urging Preston North End fans to lift the roof tonight and roar the team of the month on to a first-leg victory in the play-offs.
The Preston boss, who scooped the Coca-Cola Championship award for April and then dedicated it to everyone else at the club, wants a repeat of Sunday's 'phenomenal' atmosphere to carry his underdogs through to Bramall Lane on Monday with at least a one-goal lead.

And with the game expected to attract Deepdale's third 20,000-plus gate since the turn of the year, Irvine says the supporters who have helped so much to get North End into the four-club knockout can lift them up to even greater things.

"I know it is a two-way thing," said Irvine, after describing his first managerial award as a 'team effort' for the players, staff and fans.

"But the players will do everything they can to give the supporters something to cheer about, and in return the crowd can make this stadium an intimidating place.

"They were a huge help and a huge influence on Sunday. That was an atmosphere I have never witnessed before inside Deepdale. It was fantastic.

"It is a very intimidating thing for a visiting team to have to put up with that kind of noise. It was phenomenal and my players responded tremendously to it.

"It would be great if they could do it again tonight."

Preston go into the first leg as the outsiders, having sneaked into the shoot-out on the final day by pipping Cardiff by a solitary goal.

This is the eighth time PNE have made the play-offs in 20 years, and all the previous seven have ended in failure.

But Irvine and his players believe this could be the club's year, especially as they are on a four-game winning streak and feeling no pressure at all.

"There is no doubt we are going into these games feeling very good about ourselves," Irvine said. "We feel confident we can win against anybody."

Irvine expects both legs against the Blades to be tight, especially as the sides only conjured up one goal between them in two league meetings.

United are expected to adopt a cautious approach in the hope of keeping Preston in check and then hitting them when the action switches across the Pennines on Monday night.

Irvine said: "These are games which will probably swing on very fine margins.

"They have a fantastic away record based on playing either a 4-5-1 or a 4-4-1-1 system.

"I don't see any reason why they should change too much, because it has been very effective for them.

"They also tend to play 4-4-2 at home and that may be what they will do on Monday, but that will depend on where the tie is after the first leg."

Ross Wallace will return to the starting line-up after his one-match ban, with Simon Whaley likely to stand down.

Irvine is also considering the claims of Chris Brown up front alongside Jon Parkin, after they combined for Sean St Ledger's winning goal on Sunday.

It was Parkin's huge throw into the goalmouth, something not seen at North End before, which was flicked on by Brown and headed in by the Saint.

With the Blades having two players – Greg Halford and Leigh Bromby – who possess a long throw, it could turn out to be an aerial duel.

Irvine is familiar with two-legged ties from his time in Europe with Everton.

He said: "We must approach tonight as a normal game.

"We know that whatever happens in the first leg, it is only half-time and we have to do it all over again on Monday.

"We want to make sure we are going into the second leg very much in contention.

"Ideally we would like to have a very nice lead, but I don't think that is necessarily going to be the case.

"I don't think a draw would be the worst result, because I believe we can win at Bramall Lane as much as Sheffield United can win here."

I'm buzzin this morning. It's really hard trying to keep calm and do a days work. I'm the only North End fan where I work and people have been wishing me luck for tonight. Not working near Preston and being surrounded by Liverpool & Everton fans is good cos they're all rooting for PNE in the play offs. Not long to go now. Let's make it as noisy as hell and make Paddy Kenny drop a few clangers.

I hope they make Blackwell pay a deposit (returnable following an inspection of the dressing rooms).

No predictions from me - only prayers.

The 4 would be Chappy; Cal; Hart and Finney !(though Kenna seemed to be struggling with a leg injury immediately after SSL scored but seemed to run it off).

AgAinst Blackpool and QPR the home fans numbered around the same yet the CROWD NOISE was drastically different - even when were weren't winning on Sunday.

In ALL My time at Deepdale I have only heard that volume of atmosphere 6 times Rotherham H (70); Torquay H; Arsenal @ H (1st 30 mins); Birmingham H (extra time); Sunderland @ H when keane had taken over and last sunday @ 2.30 ish...

Beat Rotherham 3 - 0
Beat Torquay 4 - 1
Were beating Arsenal 2 - 0
Beat Brum on Pens
beat Sunderland 4 - 1
and QPR we all know

SEE a Pattern/ ( ok Arsennal were a bit too good )but Sheff U aren't....

Lets not WAIT to be lifted....or WAIT to be entertained....Lets PANIC Sheff U....

OVER TO YOU WHO CAN GET TO THE GAME...

I'LL BE LISTENING FOR YOU !!!!!

I dread to think what sort of tactics Blackwell has got planned tonight!! If we keep our cool and having a Prem ref, hopefully he'll be down on them like a ton of bricks. I'd imagine they'd come and hope for a 0-0 draw. I don't think it'll be pretty but then again, an early goal by us and who know's what will happen.

I am pleading with Alan not to play two big lads up front & play Sheff U at their own game. Morgan & Kilgallon will gobble up long balls up all night for fun, just as Barker did a few weeks ago. We need to move the ball away from their CBs into the channels, on the floor & turn the defence. Morgan is far less effective when pulled out of the centre, when turned in the channel or ran at with the ball. Therfore I would go for Mellor with either Brown or Parkin. More mobility up front says Brown, however Parkin is in form & will also offer us more cover on defensive set pieces & dare I say it the option of of our very own long throw (which I don't think we should over rely on as this is meat & drink to Sheff U). Their danger comes from Cotterill & Ward on the flanks and O'toole centrally, supporting Henderson from long balls/flick ons. Sheff U are a robust Team, hard to play against & hard to beat but we can beat them, but only if we try to play football (& mix it up when appropriate). One dimensional, straight long punts will not win this tie for PNE.

Post no9. I remember that that game as a 9 year old stood on the old kop. We got beaten by Port Vale in play offs if memory serves me right. Although I definitely think we can do it this time round. I hope hope we dont allow ourselves to be drawn into the type of game that plays into sheff utd hands as i remember us doing in the home fixture this season. Lets get the ball down and play. Come on the whites

Whatever the type of game, I hope everyone who can get there gets behind the team and thoroughly enjoys the experience. As AI says, lets help the team go from a 'good season to a great season'.

I'm shaking with nerves and excitement

Isn't football BRILLIANT!
