Preston North End boss Alan Irvine is no fan of squad rotation, but he could be forced to use it for Tuesday's Carling Cup tie with Chesterfield.
The Scot is expected to change a winning line-up to cope with three games in the first week of the new season.

Irvine insists any reshuffle will not be out of disrespect for the opposition, or the competition.

"I have got a big decision to make," he told the Evening Post as he pondered his starting 11 to face the League Two side.

"The easy thing for me to do – and the thing I am most comfortable with – is to say 'same again lads' and send out the team which won at Ipswich.

"But perhaps at this stage of the season it is asking a lot to ask the lads to play three games inside a week.

"It is something I have to consider – are they battle-hardened yet and ready to play three games at high intensity so soon?

"There is the possibility of extra-time in this one and then we have got a very important game against Crystal Palace coming up on Saturday.

"I have got a lot of players who have been in really good form in pre-season, who didn't play at the weekend and who are looking for an opportunity to play.

"Picking the team was extremely difficult for Saturday. I could have picked other players. So it is a tough decision and one which I am still going over in my head."

Irvine is adamant the Carling Cup rates high on his priority list even though some managers pay little more than lip-service to English football's secondary knockout competition.

The Deepdale boss sees it as PNE's chance to play at Wembley, although he is also aware the club have not had the best of times in the tournament in recent seasons.

Opening round defeats by Barnsley, Port Vale and Morecambe in the past three years have disappointed supporters.

And Irvine, getting his first taste of the competition as a manager tonight, is well aware it is time Preston get past the first hurdle at least.

"I see it as a very serious competition," he said.

"This is another really important game for us because, if we can win this one, then we will have started the season really well.

"I want to win all the games that we play.

"I see the competition as a terrific one and one which I have really fond memories of as a player.

"I have total respect for it, it is an opportunity for us to play at Wembley. And if lots of teams don't want to take it seriously then that's fantastic for us."

Be good to see Wallace and Aniyansah(however you spell it) playing tonight! Would also throw Jarrett in the middle and try Jones at CB - depending on how he copes there we may not need cover.

I agree Collydog. I'd go even further, we've a lot of strength in depth now, and the likes of Matty Hill, Lewis Neal and Darren Carter won't be content to sit on the sidelines forever, match practice would do them good. Playing lower level opposition just might allow Karl Hawley to bag a couple and stake a claim too, as he and Brett must be realising that Alan Irvine's decision on Saturday to play Whaley out of position at CF ahead of them is not a resounding ring of confidence. I personally don't think Brett Ormerod will be here at the end of August.

Whaleys not playing out of position, he's a striker, he was playing striker at bury. So we've been playing him out of position since he joined.

------------Lonners---------------

Hart -- Jones -- Ledger -- Hill

Anyinsah -- Jarrett -- Carter -- Wallace

-------Hawley ----- Boremerod ----

That should be more than enopugh to put away Chesterfield however, they won 3-1 at the weekend so they will be feeling good and we all know what our record is like in years gone by.

I'd keep the key partnerships in tact for tonight.

Ledge and Mawene at the Back and Mells and Whaley up front we need these partnerships to grow. But could possibly change everyone else and unleash Wallace.

I think we should have Hawley and ormerod up front cos if they bag a couple other teams may think they are good so may then want to buy them!!! The rumour over Anichebe won't go away, so lose these 2 and get him after Olympics - he looks quality!

The worry is that if you disrupt a winning squad it will have a bad effect and that is the decisions that Managers live and die by so it will be up to Irvine to decide.

I agree with keeping a couple of key partnerships intact just to be safe and especially at the back. However maybe the full backs could be rotated especially Davidson who we need to keep as fit as possible all season.

Maybe the midfield could be rotated but perhaps leave either Chaplow or Kenna in and bring in A.N. Other to see how they fare? I.e. Jarrett who by all accounts was excellent in pre-season then absent from teh 16 last saturday.

Hawley and Whaley uptop could be an idea but would be very lightweight. However their pace should trouble chesterfield.

Anyone concerned this game might be off with all this rain?

I've said it before and I'll say it again . . get Anichebe. You can't put a price on a striker who scores and scores. Looking forward to seeing Wallace tonight and the progression of the new stand. Does anybody know what is happening underneath the big football pools advertisement boards? It just looks blank and unfinished. Cant complain however at least its not a car park like the shed up the M55.
