Football legend Sir Bobby Charlton, the ex-Manchester United star and former Preston North End boss, has returned to Preston to meet hundreds of fans.
Sir Bobby visited Waterstone's in Fishergate yesterday to sign copies of his latest book, My England Years.

Around 300 fans queued outside the store to meet the ex-Manchester United and England hero who was player-manager at PNE in 1973.

Students Alec Femm and Alex Stewart, both 19 and from Lancaster, were first in line, having arrived more than two hours before the signing started.

Alec said: "I'm a massive Man United fan. Bobby is a living legend. It's like seeing a bit of history in the flesh."

Health service manager Michelle Mellington, 33, enjoyed a joke with Sir Bobby about one of his soccer schools which she attended in Penwortham almost 20 years ago.

Michelle, from Longton, said: "It was nice to see him again.

"He was laughing when I told him about the soccer school and asked if it made any difference."

Sir Bobby's book, his second autobiography, tells tales from his days as an international player.

Had the fortune to meet Bobby Charlton at a Football Exhibition in 1970 and then 5 years later on the "league liner" that took PNE fans to Euston Station when we lost an FA Cup 3rd round tie at Craven Cottage. Booby, as the manager, came into the train where all the PNE fans, signing autographs and chatting. Absolutely wonderful person, but too nice for football management. Fantastic footballer too, saw him in the side that relegated Burnley (2:0 i think) Easter around 1972.

As great a perston, footballer he is, he's still behind Sir Tom imho. ;-)

Post1 - Sir Bobby deserves respect for all he did as a player, you should not call him a booby.

Always struck me as a really really miserable guy.

However, i watched a documentary about him and apparently was never the same person wise after Munich in 58. Before that he was smiling all the time but after the crash and loss of all those souls he just couldnt be happy anymore.
