Westley - Draw a fair result

Graham Westley felt that Preston North End’s 2-2 draw with Coventry City on Saturday was a fair result.

North End took a 29th minute lead through Graham Cummins’ third goal of the season, former PNE loanee Leon Clarke equalising before half-time for the visitors.

Chris Robertson put through his own goal to give the Sky Blues the advantage early in the second half, with Nicky Wroe levelling things up soon after.

While the draw halted a run of three conseutive defeats in all competitions, this was a 10th consecutive home league game without victory - a club record.

Westley said: “I thought it was a good game of football, both sides showed a lot of good quality both in their defensive and attacking play.

“It was a competitive game and probably a fair result in the end.

“With us having two debutants in the back four, one of them a 17-year-old making their debut, it was always going to be a tricky opening to the game.

“So it proved to be, but we conceded fewer chances as the game wore on and the back four settled themselves down.

“In the opening period we were a little bit nervous, a bit apprehensive.

“But once we found our feet there was a lot more to be positive about.

“We saw early on what a great shot-stopper Thorsten Stuckmann is.

“What we need now is to get Stucks to the point where his organisational skills mean he doesn’t have to make as many saves.

“An important part of his development is to get his defence playing a higher line, force them forward.

“But as far as his shot-stopping is concerned, he was first class.”

Westley, who takes North End to play Crawley Town on Tuesday night, hopes to do some incoming and outgoing transfer business before the window shuts on Thursday.

He said: “There are a couple of things I have been on for the last fortnight but we need players to go out before we bring them in.

“It’s not a question of can I get the ones I want.

“I can get the ones, but can I do the trades which are needed?

“Some of that is about persuading people to give us the chance to bring in what I think are vital ingredients.

“Hopefully something will happen before transfer deadline day.”
