The Fleetwood Bowls Festival has another full entry and bowlers are ready to roll next week.

The festival’s main sponsor is again Willowgrove Leisure Parks and Fishery.

The main singles competitions have attracted almost 400 bowlers from all over the country, who will all play on the opening day on Monday, July 21.

Several former festival winners have entered the men’s singles event.

Graeme Wilson, Martin Gilpin, Michael Leach – last year’s champion – and two-times Waterloo winner Simon Coupe from Preston are all competing to take the £1,000 first prize and book a place in the Champion of Champions at the Waterloo in September.

However, there will be fierce competition from many of the local bowlers such as Fleetwood’s Mike Bennett, David Wright and Dave Walters, the festival treasurer, as well as other top competition players.

In the ladies singles, last year’s winner Karen Galvin is again one of the favourites.

Bbut there are sure to be some great performances from the locals as well as
other lady bowlers including Joyce Foxcroft, Julie
Gardner and Catherine Lockwood.

Bowling will take place all week in the re-developed Marine Gardens but some qualifying rounds will be played in the Memorial Park and Fleetwood Bowling Club.

Thursday morning sees the last 32 of both the men’s and ladies’ singles and in the afternoon from 1.30pm qualification for the junior competition will be taking place in the Marine Gardens.

Many youngsters have already signed up for the free event, with Alan Ward the festival co-ordinator.

Mercian Travel is again sponsoring the juniors this year.

Any interested under-16s can still join by contacting Alan Ward on 01253 886151, before Thursday, July 24.

Grand Finals Day for all competitions takes place on Friday, July 25, in the Marine Gardens, when more than £7,000 in prize money will be paid out.

Spectators are welcome and the festival programme provides full details of the week’s events and can be obtained from the Marine Hall’s Information Centre or from any Committee member.
