Chorley’s Laura Massaro has become the U.S. Open Squash Champion after an exhilarating 11/6, 9/11, 6/11, 11/8, 11/7 victory against Egypt’s Nour El Tayeb.

The 31-year-old, who last won the title in 2011, had to fight back from 2-1 down after the Egyptian overcame early nerves to take the lead in the match.

Massaro - showing more of the never say die attitude that got her to the final - fought back brilliantly, capitalising on the Egyptian’s errors and trying to quicken the pace of the game with her strong volleying.

Despite El Tayeb throwing herself across the court with some spectacular retrieving, the 22-year-old could not stop Massaro from marching to victory and winning another PSA World Series Championship.

“I’m absolutely over the moon to be the 2015 U.S. Open champion It’s been a brilliant week and although I’ve made it difficult for myself at times, mostly by being 2-0 or 2-1 down, I’ve really enjoyed my squash,” said Massaro.

"Winning this title feels extra special to me because of the break that I had earlier this year and going 18 months without a title before winning in Macau a few weeks ago,” said Massaro.

“To now win two tournaments in a month, and a major title such as the US Open, mean a lot and I’m really proud with myself because I worked really hard this summer and it’s incredibly pleasing to see that pay off.

“I want to be known for so much more than my comebacks but I just keep doing it! I have a deep inner belief that I can come back from any position and that is my biggest strength and I keep trying as hard as I can and somehow it keeps working.”

“I want to thank my husband Danny, coach David Pearson and everyone back home, who have helped me to achieve this result today. It’s a great feeling!” exclaimed Massaro.

On her way to the final Massaro beat Malaysian superstar Nicol David in a similar fashion in the quarter finals and overcame Egyptian Omneya Kawy at the semi final stages.

In the men’s final Frenchman Gregory Gaultier was victorious over Egyptian Omar Mosaad 11/6, 11/3, 11/5.
