Chorley’s Laura Massaro helped England’s women win the World Team Squash Championship in Canada.
In a thrilling final against Malaysia, world No.2 Massaro lost her match against the world’s best player Nicol David 3-0 , but her team-mates Sarah Jane Perry and Alison Waters won their matches to secure a brilliant 2-1 win.
“This has been an amazing event from every point of view and thanks to Squash Canada for doing such a great job,” said Massaro.
“A massive congratulations to Malaysia for what they’ve achieved this week – it was a great final.
“There’s been an unbelievable team spirit in the England camp this week – and I honestly believe that is what has made the difference.
England began the final in convincing style when Perry beat Malaysian Delia Arnold 11-8, 11-9, 11-7.
However, Massaro was unable to win the match in her rubber as she met an inspired David, who won 11-8, 11-9 11-3.
“Beating Laura is never easy, said David. “I had to dig deep, and beatingher 3-0 is a great result. I’m so glad I brought a point to the team, it was such a wonderful feeling to be in the final. It was a dream for us.”
In the final match, England sealed the win when Waters defeated Low Wee Wern 3-1.
