Shaun Murphy is excited by next week’s Wyldecrest Park Homes Players Championship Grand Final at the Guild Hall in Preston having broken his long wait for a ranking title.

Murphy won the Haikou World Open in China on Sunday, beating Mark Selby 10-6 in the final. It was the fifth ranking title of his career and first in three years.

Next Tuesday evening in Preston, Murphy will be much closer to home, as he faces world No.1 Neil Robertson in the tie of the opening round at the Guild Hall.

“It’s great to have a tournament in Preston and it means a lot of lads from the club where I practise will come along and support me,” said the 31-year-old, looking ahead to the tournament which runs from March 25 to 29.

“I went to watch snooker at the Guild Hall as a kid, when the UK Championship was there.

“The venue is just set up perfectly for snooker so I can’t wait to go back there and play in a big event.

“I have hit form at just the right time as we build towards the end of the season.”
