The annual Tom Barron bowling competition was again held at Woodplumpton and District Club and was won by Hoghton’s Simon Coupe, who beat Mark Holden 21-14.

Despite being a cold dreary day the competition did escape with only a few heavy showers.

The top half of the draw saw Simon Coupe beat Stuart Marshall (playing his first game of the season ) 21-17.

Bill Livesey lost by the same score to Paul Jackson,Richard Hoyles beat Jon Metters 21-16, while newcomer Tom Lowndes lost 21-14 to Kieren Dodd.

Darren Edmondson beat David Jackson 21-10,Owen Jackson beat Gavin Parker 21- 12, Clay Flattley lost 21-13 to John Fox and Ian Penzer lost to Roy Foster 21-19.

In the bottom half of the draw, Ian Nicholson beat Mark Gregson 21-15, Daniel Sillitoe beat Mike Leach 21-17, Joey Hibberson beat Tom Ashcroft 21-11, Jack Livesey lost to James Grimston 21-8, Paul Livesey lost to Barry Simm 21-17, Hugh Hornby beat Mike Hewitson 21-6, Steve Johnston beat David Brown 21-19 and Mark Holden beat James Ball 21-19.

The second round saw Coupe, Dodd, Jackson and Fox through in the top half and Sillitoe, Grimston, Simm and Holden in the bottom half.

The quarter-finals saw Coupe, Jackson, Grimston and Holden all through to the semi-finals.

Coupe overcame Jackson 21-6 and Holden beat Grimston 21-16.

The final was a close fought battle in the early stages against the changing pace of the green thanks to the previous heavy showers and blustery wind with the players levelling at 11 across.

Coupe then forged ahead to win 21-14.
