Sammy wants fans to back league push
Sammy McIlroy has pleaded with Morecambe's stay-away fans to back their growing promotion push.
Just 1,558 supporters clicked through the turnstiles for Saturday's 2-1 win over Barnet, the lowest gate in the football league, to leave the Shrimps three points behind the play-offs ahead of tonight's clash at Macclesfield.
"We have a loyal fan-base, but that attendance was a poor one," said McIlroy.
"It is the same for many clubs, times are hard, but it was our first home game since Accrington on Boxing Day, and I thought we'd get a few more in because we'd not played for so long.
"We had a good run, especially before Christmas when we won seven league games in a row, and I'd love to see a few more fans coming supporting us, because I think the lads deserve it."
Morecambe will leave Christie Park behind and move to a new stadium in time for the big kick-off next August, but this term's league average of 2,291 is a disappointing statistic.
Mark Duffy set up Stewart Drummond to head the opener against Barnet before the former Southport winger produced a cool finish to clinch the points.
"It was great to get back on track again after the postponements and interruptions we have suffered," added McIlroy.
"It was a big result because we'd lost our previous two games to Accrington and Rochdale and we are firing again."
Macclesfield picked up a useful point on Saturday, drawing 0-0 at Port Vale, but McIlroy's former club have tasted defeat five times in the league at home.
McIlroy, who bossed Macc from 1993 to 2000, said he still retains an interest in Lancaster striker Jordan Connerton.
"We've had him watched three times and I've spoken to Lancaster," he confirmed.
