Ryan’s mighty as Shrimps hit back

Hero: Ryan Williams got a late winner

Hero: Ryan Williams got a late winner

Dagenham 1 Morecambe 2

Supersub Ryan Williams scored a goal of real quality to earn Morecambe a vital three points at Dagenham.

Williams scored his second goal for the club eight minutes from time after some smart footwork created space in the box for him to curl a delightful effort past Chris Lewington.

It sealed an excellent comeback from the Shrimps, who trailed 1-0 going into the final 10 minutes of the game.

The game may have ended on a high but it started poorly with both sides struggling to keep possession.

Morecambe had the first chance of the game when the ball broke free in the Dagenham box but his shot was straight at Chris Lewington.

Dagenham then created a chance of their own from the next attack when Morecambe keeper Roche had to react sharply to tip away a Sam Williams curler from the edge of the box.

Williams then threatened again with a shot from 25 yards that sent Roche scrambling to his right to save before the Daggers striker diverted a right-wing cross from Jake Reed wide of the left-hand post.

Morecambe did have the ball in the back of the net on 37 minutes when Nick Fenton headed a Lewis Alessandra free kick past Lewington but the referee disallowed the goal for a foul.

A dour game came to life on the hour when Dagenham took the lead through defender Luke Wilkinson as he proved too strong for Nick Fenton to head a Matt Saunders free-kick past Barry Roche from close range.

Morecambe stepped up the pace and brought on Williams, Jack Redshaw and Jordan Burrow from the bench in a move that gave them a new attacking edge.

And the changed made by boss Jim Bentley paid off as the Shrimps turned the game on its head with two goals in two minutes.

Redshaw was the inspiration for Morecambe’s first as he played Stewart Drummond in behind the Daggers’ back four with a delightful through ball, which the Morecambe veteran took advantage of with a superb right-foot finish to beat Lewington from 12 yards.

Then Williams netted what proved to be the winner with eight minutes remaining.

The drama continued as Luke Howell almost earned the Daggers a point with the final kick of the game with a right-foot shot that grazed the right hand post with Roche beaten.
